New York Already Keeps Watch for Nursing Home Abuses

“Keep Nursing Home Standards” (editorial, Oct. 18) urges caution in returning nursing home regulation to the states, fearing a repeat of the notorious scandals that rocked New York’s nursing home industry in the 1970’s. But you overlook the fact that New York already maintains a great deal of oversight over abuses at nursing homes, and the efforts of my office to insure that residents receive the best possible treatment without fear of physical or emotional abuse. My Medicaid Fraud Control Unit, which was created in response to the original nursing home scandals, prosecutes dozens of cases each year involving abuse of frail, elderly nursing home residents. Indeed, my commitment to vigorously pursuing these cases can be seen in the fact that, during the first nine months of this year, my office has already prosecuted more cases of abuse than in all of 1994.
