Israeli politician guilty of sexual assault

A former Israeli cabinet minister, Yitzhak Mordechai, has been found guilty by a court in Jerusalem of sexually assaulting two female subordinates. The verdict in the high-profile case has been hailed as a breakthrough by women’s groups, who say that sexual harassment is rarely prosecuted in Israel. Mr Mordechai, a former prime ministerial candidate, was serving in the administration of Ehud Barak when a female employee accused him of assault last year. The publicity encouraged two other former employees to come forward with complaints against Mr Mordechai, who faces a possible seven year jail term when he is sentenced next month.
