The Federal Government has announced tougher measures meant to protect elderly people from being abused in nursing homes. Already aged care homes have to submit to random inspections, and staff and volunteers have their backgrounds checked. But now the Minister for Ageing Santo Santoro plans to change the way complaints are resolved by appointing a commissioner with wide ranging powers. Brendan Trembath reports. BRENDAN TREMBATH: The search is on for an Aged Care Commissioner who will rigorously investigate claims of abuse in Australia’s aged care homes. The Minister for Ageing Santo Santoro hopes to fill the job by the end of April. SANTO SANTORO: The Commissioner will have investigative powers, will be backed up by an intelligence unit which will certainly have a lot more information available from the agency, the accreditation agency, from the department, from its own office.
