Barry’s Defense Counters Witness’s Testimony of a Sexual Assault

LEAD: Charles Lewis, a leading prosecution witness in Mayor Marion S. Barry Jr.’s drug and perjury trial, testified today that he could not support a female acquaintance’s charge that Mr. Barry had sexually attacked her.

Charles Lewis, a leading prosecution witness in Mayor Marion S. Barry Jr.’s drug and perjury trial, testified today that he could not support a female acquaintance’s charge that Mr. Barry had sexually attacked her.

The woman, Linda Maynard, who met Mr. Barry through Mr. Lewis, testified earlier in the trial that the Mayor forced her to have sex with him at a hotel in the Virgin Islands in March 1988.

But after being summoned back to the stand by the defense, Mr. Lewis said today that he had seen Ms. Maynard and the Mayor together shortly after the incident is supposed to have occurred and that she seemed calm and composed.
